Liu Hong Yuan

When I first saw these, I thought they must be by some ancient Chinese painter. Nope. Actually, they were just painted like a few years ago. They look so… old! And magnificent!

Liu uses a European technique of painting with literally tons of layers of white paint before she adds any color to create more of a 3D effect on the canvas. I would just die to see these in person! I love how she puts as much detail in the jewelry and clothing of the piece as in the faces of the characters. And as for the people in the paintings, they’re so… creepy! The faces and poses are incredibly sinister in the calmest way possible. It amazes me how vibrant the colors can be when the piece in fact sends a deeply disturbing feeling throughout me. Whenever I feel disturbed, I know the artist did a swell job.

Si Scott

If you’re foaming at the mouth after looking at a few of these, it’s normal. These are amazing. You’ll be ok.

Si Scott has made quite a name for himself and he only seems to be getting better. With the amount of detail that goes into each piece, just looking at it once isn’t enough. After the initial gaze and after you’ve picked your jaw up from the floor, you gotta really get a close look and notice all the fine curves that go into making the overall piece. At this point it’s normal for your jaw to crash to the ground a second time.

He’s worked for many many large clients and has given many many large talks and I’m left wondering: “where does he go from there?” Is that the top? I’d be curious to see where else his style of art and design take him.

Where do you think his talents will take him? Share with us in the comments.

I’m a total sucker for using very few colors and I can’t help but dig on the postures this kid has going on. The body language is super nice and it’s still conveying an emotion which is perceived instantly. There’s something more than “picture of a hot chick” going on and sometimes people get hung out up on the chick and forget to look at all the yummy little details.

Mysterious Letters

This is something I wish I could be apart of. Michael Crowe and Lenka Clayton decided to write a letter to everyone in the world, one town at a time. They claim that the artwork is not in the letters themselves, but in the discussion between neighbors about what the letters are for and who sent them. I could spend all day reading through each letter they post on their blog. Every single one is hilarious, or sad, or sweet, or confusing, or really any emotion you can name.

I first found this a couple years ago, and since then they have posted more letters that they sent out and I felt obligated to share. Wouldn’t you want one of these sent to you? I would probably frame mine. Or burn it.

Mailchimp Resource Guide Covers

Another brought to us by, Katrina Hess

She shot me an email with this modest collection of well designed “covers” for great resource PDFs from Mailchimp. After working on building the internet in an office all day, it’s nice to be shown a little corner of the web where design was actually thought about.

Although these designs are quite basic, one of the most gripping things for me was that the beautiful design doesn’t really serve a purpose. I’m sure that the page would be just as functional if it were a list of the Titles with a little tiny PDF icon. After all, I only clicked on one’s that I was actually interested in reading.

In the end, it’s just good to see good design :)

Summer Heights High

America is full to the brim with shitty television. Between Jersey Shore and Wipe Out, I think we are single-handedly responsible for the general dumbing-down of the population. There are some gems, mind you, such as The Office. A bad example, really, because it was originally started on British television. Okay, scratch my entire argument. American television is seriously bad most of the time.

Being an avid collector of all things weird, I decided that my choice in programming should be extended overseas as well. I took on the challenge of trying to access any foreign shows online, but the rest of the world knows how America likes to ruin things and so they make it nearly impossible to access the videos from the US. Luckily, Youtube helped me out quite a bit, and with a bit of direction from my friend Christian, I ventured into the world of Australian television, more specifically Summer Heights High.

Summer Heights High is a mockumentary following the lives of three separate people, all played by an Australian comedian named Chris Lilley, as they go through a year of public school. There’s Ja’mie (Ja-may), a spoiled private school student who is participating in an exchange program; Jonah, a Tongan miscreant trying to get through the year without being expelled; and Mr. G, a drama teacher with a god-complex. Lilley has two other shows as well, the first is called We Can Be Heroes, and the second is called Angry Boys, premiering on HBO this summer. Both are the same style, mockumentaries in which he plays all the main characters. Lilley commits so fully to each character that you can’t even tell it’s the same guy wearing different wigs. Every line he writes is hilarious, the plot is edgy and ridiculous and so believable. I can watch this show a hundred times and have tears of laughter streaming down my face without fail. It’s a little hard to find, but if you’re up for the challenge it is well worth your time.

Lost Type
Co-Op

It’s a name your price font shop. Yeah. I know!

Lost Type Co-Op just launched yesterday and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It’s pretty much the most genius thing in the entire world and I can’t believe it’s only just now happening.

I know that there have been free fonts out there for a million years, but the type on Lost Type is actually good and it’s presented really well. The site is super simple and straight forward and I can dig it (plus the table on the right displaying a fonts attributes is very pretty).

This does, of course, bring about the looming future of these fonts becoming too prevalent. However there are always these problems and we’re forced to recognize when our designs are just too trendy to carry any significant weight. This is when we think of new solutions to common problems to stand tall from the rest. After all, we should already be striving to do this in our work.

Anyway, hit up their site and enjoy what they’re doing for you :)

*Thank you to Katrina Hess who brought this to my attention. She’s also a designer who appreciates the finer things.

Looking at this kid’s work it’s hard not to want to explode out of your seat and go make something amazing. The second I laid eyes on his work an alarming amount of ambition was dispatched into my veins until I could feel my pores quiver with anticipation of what this inspiration may lead to.

The real thing to see is his MSCED collection (which is what makes up most of this post). If your jaw doesn’t hit the floor while looking at these, I submit that you are blind.

His identity work gives me mixed feelings. I don’t much care for each piece on its own, but as a full blown identity the work is quite successfull.

Dig his work? show him some mad love!

Zoran Lucić

Caught wind of this kid on Behance and I had to share his work with you.

This style is super nice but it’s borderline expected—make something looks older than it is, but the sense of design is still very much there and what really grabbed me was that I felt inspired after looking at these! Not to go make retro posters or anything, but for screen printing! I don’t think these are screen printed, but if they were…. forget about it.

I hope that you too are inspired, even if it’s to go out and do something that has nothing to do with design, or if it’s to yell at people saying, “it’s called football!!!” Inspiration can leave us in wait for weeks at a time, so, if you’re inspired by something, spread the word about cool shit you find :)
