Liu Hong Yuan
When I first saw these, I thought they must be by some ancient Chinese painter. Nope. Actually, they were just painted like a few years ago. They look so… old! And magnificent!
Liu uses a European technique of painting with literally tons of layers of white paint before she adds any color to create more of a 3D effect on the canvas. I would just die to see these in person! I love how she puts as much detail in the jewelry and clothing of the piece as in the faces of the characters. And as for the people in the paintings, they’re so… creepy! The faces and poses are incredibly sinister in the calmest way possible. It amazes me how vibrant the colors can be when the piece in fact sends a deeply disturbing feeling throughout me. Whenever I feel disturbed, I know the artist did a swell job.
