Alex Varanese

BossnotBoss just passed through San Fran, thinking of Alex and what he’s been up to in his great city. These are all part of his newest series Inside the Edge. Love them! I wish I could have them all lined up on my wall.

It’s so nice to see the ocean! Living in Seattle can get depressing sometimes, because our beaches aren’t very pleasant and I get seriously deprived of beautiful shores. So these help a bit. If you haven’t heard of Alex Varanese, I’m sorry. But you can check the rest of his shit here.

Road Trip!

We’ll be out for two weeks starting tomorrow, with our dear friend, Katie, to trek across a chunk of the USA. Peep the route, going counter clockwise, and let us know if we’re gonna be close to your town so you can offer up a place for us to sleep and give us your food :) Or just let us know of some dope spots we gotta hit up.

Why is BNB going on this epic interstate tour? Selena’s never been to New Orleans, so we’re doing that: Cajun style.

Don’t worry if you notice we’re not posting every day; that’s just how it is out there when you’re livin’ by the code of the road: miles from home, miles from friends, eat what you can when you can, and updating your blog is slightly less easy.

Planned stops:

  • Quest Field (my pa will be crossing a marathon finish line)
  • Canon Beach (duh)
  • Red Wood National Park
  • San Francisco
  • Austin
  • New Orleans

Metronomy’s The English Riviera

Discribed on thier site as “a gorgeous record full of languid, sunset funk songs,” this new album is turning out to sound super fresh. It’s mostly chill aside from the super dancable, The Bay, but the album’s def worth a smooth smooth listen through :)

Plus be sure to hit the Breakbot remix of ‘A Thing For Me,’ which is off Metronomy’s ‘Nights Out’ release.

Ps. Gbenga Adelekan (bass) looks like the coolest man alive!

Boogie

I know working for Nike, HBO, and Rolling Stones must get pretty boring after awhile, right? Yeah, probably not. Boogie is an editorial and advertising photographer, but his personal work is truly my favorite. It looks like he travels around the world literally on a daily basis and uploads photos to his website almost everyday. You can actually see a photo he just took today in Thailand. It’s pretty amazing. His newest show Demons (over in a couple days) looks quite beautiful, and very different from his usual black & white film style.

What I love about this photography is that I really can’t picture myself in any of the places he takes photos. Crack houses, dark alleys of third world countries, strip clubs, on the street in the middle of the hood, etc. I just don’t often venture those kinds of places. So, it intrigues me even more. Well, it mostly makes me sad and scared, but also intrigued. Check out the rest of his work here.

I like killing flies

This modest documentary bears great fruit. It follows the tiny Shopsin’s restaurant in New York run by one family: the Shopsin’s. I know it doesn’t sound like much of a flick at first, but once you get an ear-full of Kenny ( Dad who runs the place) you’ll be feelin’ it.

Telling customers to fuck themselves is a dream that all of us share, and if you don’t aspire to tell a stranger what they can go do, I submit, dear reader, you are a robot.

This vid was made by Matt Mahurin (possibly better known for his Metallica videos). It looks like it was shot by a kid who’d never held a camera before, the quality is bad, the audio is meh, and Matt’s hand is in half the shots holding up one of those shirt clip mics. All those things make this video great! It brings this intimate and human quality that would be totally lost if there was a propor crew working on this.

Find it on Netflix instant and make a sweet bowl of spicy popcorn

ps. I’m feelin’ that type

Sougwen Chung

Obviously  the first thing I thought when I saw these was, “whaaaaa…”. In the partial sense of “whaaaaaat!? These are awesome” and partially, “whaaat the fuck is going on?”

The work here has me arrested in a state of awe. I almost feel overwhelmed by looking at it; not sure where to focus my attention. Typically, when there’s no sense of hierarchy, I’d be upset, but I’m diggin’ on this work so much—fuck it. Who cares about hierarchy when what you’re looking at is so dope?

Sougwen is a designer and, clearly, an illustrator. You’d do yourself a favor by peeping all the work here and notice how all the element flock into place when you enter the site :)

Nicholas Max

I have to give this kid some massive props. Not only for his few works of amazing photography, but for his seamless Photoshop skillz. He is burnin’ the photography scene up! And then some more props for his super fast learning ability. This kid is gona be huge. I just feel it.

At first, I only saw a few shots I was totally into and I almost passed him up on Flickr. But then I saw that he had been only shooting for 5 months. 5 MONTHS. Are you joking me?? And he’s only 17 years old. I hope this isn’t just some spoiled rich kid looking for his next kick, but I guess it doesn’t matter if there’s raw talent involved. And you can’t deny that this isn’t talent. It’s a little hipster and a little easy, but who ever thought a Photoshopped tornado could look so goooood? Damn.

Definitely check the rest of his shit on his tumblr and Flickr and give Nicholas a lil’ shout out. I can’t tell what is his or not on his tumblr, but there’s some cool stuff on there anyways.

P.s. totally digging the square format.

Daniel Danger

Yes. Let it be another screen print post! These prints by Daniel are not the typical show poster that you may be used to. These prints are so moody and dark; to learn that they’re screen prints almost startles you. They ought to be paraded around in a thousand cities and have people wonder in awe about what that big giant silhouetted dude is all about.

Perhaps you thought that a 12 color screen print was a lot, well get an eye full of that print with the ship on the wave with the spirits leaving the sea. 13 colors, forget about it. Is that print too cool for school? Hex yes it is.

I love how his prints are so enigmatic that curiosity about what’s going on in the image comes naturally. You just have to look into the details for any clues that could help you to figure out what this image is all about, and I think it’s important that print have this sort of aspect of time with it. You don’t just glance at these, you comb through the branches and along moldering house frames for any wisdom they may bear.

It’s no surprise that Daniel’s an artist given that his folks are one part middle school art teacher (the best kind of art teacher in my experience) and a professional potter. I didn’t even know that you could be a professional potter so I can only surmise that they were so good that you’d believe only an angel could have made them.

Hit up his site, Tiny Media Empire, for more of his work plus his paintings and peep what he’s up to.

ps. he also lit a giant guitar on fire :)

Sonnenzimmer

A 12-color screen print. Most people would say, “why bother?” WHY BOTHER?? Because screen printing is the shit. It is hands down, the coolest form of printing posters. Chris keeps joking about screen printing on panes of glass. I’m starting to think he’s not joking.

These two kids Nick and Nadine have their skill sets down though. These poster collabs are amazing. And they’re so early 90′s it’s driving me crazy! I usually can’t stand most collages, but these designs are different. They are so messy and crazy, yet there’s that tiny tiny type in a perfectly straight line with paint smeared all around it. The use of the page and general space is also fantastic. They are not afraid of the edges, believe me! And overlap and unreadable type, forget about it. They don’t give a fuck!

This is only a few of the great finds on their site so definitely be sure to check the rest. They also have them for sale!

VinsBaratta_B_1

Vins Baratta

These pics are grabbin’ me in a bad way; and I mean that in the best way.

The subjects look like how they actually look and not like they’re just posing for the camera. As if he’d brought the camera up and held it there, aiming at the person for an awkward amount of time until they finally get annoyed and Vins captures the moment of “girl or guy feeling awkward with a photographer.”

Now I’m going to run around and get some pinhole shots, but you be sure to peep his site for even more of these sweet pics.
