OK Go: All Is Not Lost

Ok Go’s videos are known for breaking away from the traditional music video, which is good, but they never really blow my brains out. This one’s different though and puts to practice something that I’ve learned is super important in design: Personalizing.

See it here!

The idea of a browser (Chrome, duh) based music video has already been done by Arcade Fire and they also personalized their vid by using google maps and the address you type in.

However OK GO goes a step further with some clever video typography! You input a phrase before you start the video, and it’s reiterated in foot-type durring the video. They even go a step further and make it so you don’t have to watch some hood running around for five minutes; instead you watch people tumbling in body suits—a far better visual

Put in a clever phrase and send the vid to a friend, or send it to an enemy :)

ps. it should be known that this vid is for japan and you can watch the making of to the right.

pps. note the domain for the vid. clever girl.

Letraset Typography

Romping around on flickr, I came across this set of images, made with letraset, and was so excited, I got up and hit Selena in the face. I’m all over this dada-esque typography! (dada is the best style of design and if you don’t think so, I’m going to jump on you ’til money comes out.)

Donald Judd said, “design has to work, art does not” which is true dependent on your definition of ‘work.’ My instinct was to look as these as design, mainly due to simply lining things up, then I realized they didn’t ‘work.’ I wasn’t reading what the type said and, in the context of Judd’s quote, that puts these in the art category. Fuck that. You and I both know that these were made with design in mind and I say it’s design. Its purpose is to be eye candy and it WORKS!

I hope you guys are as pumped on these as I am and let me know your take on the differences between design and art.

Sveta Dorosheva

I can’t get over the ornate wonders expressed in these hand drawn works that Sveta’s pumping out to us from Israel. There’s so many little things to discover within the clothes, letters, and hair. It took me a while to start this post since I was so busy looking through all the goodies in her work.

The different styles brought together here are makin’ my toes curl in the best best way. The cartoonish figures wrapped in absolutely beautiful wears, plus the way they interact has me screaming, wanting to know so badly what the story is. If, in real life, you saw two naked chicks and one had a little dog chained to her leg… tell me you wouldn’t drop everything to find out what they’re doing. I love that a lot of these trigger my imagination to figure out what’s going on.

and, helllooooo! That hand drawn typography has me at a half chub and I highly encourage everyone to at least experiment with hand drawn type in hopes that maybe, someday, their work will move a man they’ve never met to an inspire driven arousal :)

Raymond Lemstra

The first thing I took note of, as a designer, when I looked at this guy’s illustrations was a huge type design potential. HUGE. This kid has skill with a ruler. So mechanical and thought out. His style of drawing is very architectural.

Actually, Raymond does something that a lot of artists don’t do and that is creating your style not only from the utensil you use, but from the choice of canvas. His paper choice is very important to his type of drawing. If it was on crisp white paper, it wouldn’t be the same at all. He uses the organic rawness of the paper texture to contrast his structural technique. Very beautiful. It reminds me of Audrey Kawasaki and her use of smooth wood to paint her milky goddesses on. If she were to use another material, they would feel entirely different.

Check out more works by Raymond here. Also make sure to download this amazing wallpaper Raymond made for you guys.

Elizabeth Weinberg

My favorite season for photography is summer. It’s just so delicious with its sun flares and dripping ice creams and pastel fluorescents and cool, wet bodies. That’s why I love this series, Of Recklessness and Water, by Elizabeth Weinberg. Turns out, you can buy a perfect bound copy for just $15! That would be a great summer birthday gift.

What I truly love about summer photography though, are the water shots. Pictures of water can be boring, but they can also be absolutely amazing. It’s such a crazy element to shoot; constantly moving which makes for beautiful still shots and has so many depths that from close up it’s clear and from far away, it can be black as hell. Water, to me is one of the most graphic subjects to shoot. Besides, everyone always looks so happy when they are in the water :) Unless they are drowning :( Check out the rest of Elizabeth’s work here.

First Digital Camera

Steven Sasson receives titanic—gargantuan props for inventing the digital camera in 1975! Of course it’s huge, as all first generation technology is, but what really got me wasn’t that it only had one button with two positions, or that it’s wiring is exposed, it’s that it uses a damn tape to store data! I know it’s not unheard of, but that almost made me spit my coffee out.

I’d like to also see a model that does video—or film I suppose. You’d probably need a couple buddies to help you out with holding it and positioning it about town. Plus since any human subject you might have would be commissioned to help hold the cam, you’d be forced to only take landscape shots, and who likes those? Now you have a 2 megapixel landscape :|

To be honest, I would love a chance to play around with one of these! (that sentence implies that there’s more than one in existence which I cannot be certain of)

ps. the interview with Steven is done by David Friedman who interviews inventors and, because of that, is totally boss :)

Thumbs Up!

I peeped this first a few years ago, but because of our big road trip, it was brought to my attention yet again, and it’s even better the second time around.

Thumbs Up! follows two Korean dudes, David Cho (graffiti artist) and Harry Kim (his nephew) throughout America with no money, accepting rides from passing cars, trains, boats, and even planes. During their trip they hang out with the locals and try to score food and shelter whenever they can. Shredding on their electric guitars and drum kits, and making hitchhiking signs that say “WE TOSS SALADS” and “I HAVE A PUSSY”, these kids have you cracking up the whole journey. My favorite episode has to be the one where Harry Kim makes a dildo phone and a Hulk hand into a giant thumb so that their hand can be seen at night to catch a ride.

Also this seems to be just in time cuz back when I was first into it, there were only 2 seasons, but now there’s a 3rd! Check them out on Vice TV.

Awesomely Silly Vintage Bicycle Posters

A knight on a bicycle!? A cowboy aiming a shotgun while poppin a wheelie on a bicycle!? More, please!

While romping around on flickr I came across this awesome collection of bike posters. Most of them are just absolutely crazy. When I started looking at the posters, I was expecting to find beautiful posters that I’d kill to have in my home, but most of them are just plain silly in the best way.

Take ‘em in, guys, while I cycle about, putting my twin engines to work! (twin engines = legs)

Scott Campbell

So, since BossnotBoss is on the way to good ‘ole New Orleans, I thought I’d post about a pretty great designer from the area. Can anything beat screen printed gig posters? I don’t think so. Let me know if you can think of anything though. I always relish at the opportunity to laugh in people’s faces.

Circles, good. Half tones, good. Overlapping images, good. I mean, these aren’t crazy. No insane detailing or ridiculous custom type. However, we need simple things sometimes to level out all of the craziness. No?

Well anyways, you can see the rest of the set here or purchase this really sweet print here.
