Serena Cole

I was swept away by these mixed media portraits. After reading a fantastic interview thanks to Meighan at ML4Y, I really appreciated the dedication, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail that these paintings possessed. I highly suggest going over there to read the article.

The haunting background of these pieces are what makes them even darker than they first look. My favorites are the women with the headdresses; representing their views on the glamorization of death and general destruction and violence in today’s fashion world. Being a girl of high fashion interest, these intrigue me much more than the ads themselves. I can’t wait to see more of what she can do!

Jacob Jensen’s Beautiful Product Design

It’s said on BeoWorld that JJ is the designer with the greatest number of awards and honors in the world.

Like most of us, he started as a slaughterhouse apprentice in Copenhagen and went on to design furniture. Then, after a lot of work and awards, moving on from furniture to products, he started working for B&O where he would craft some of his most famous works. Works that send the mind of mortals to such a minimalist bliss, we exude tears simply because we know not how this new and wondrous emotion is to be comprehended.

Do not allow these tears of yours to bring embarrassment for, you see, even the greatest minds are overwhelmed with this beauty that they’ve overlooked their function.

“That’s not a Beolit 400 Portable Radio! It’s art.” they’d cry. ”That’s not a Beomic 2000 Microphone! It’s a gift from the heavens above!”

Now some of JJ’s most arresting pieces rest at the MoMA :)

I was thinking of a modern version of the same minimalist sense and, although lame, all I could think of was the iphone4. It’s beautiful; but I’d like to add to the list, so if you guys know modern minimalist products, let me know in the comments.

ps. sorry, there’s not more pics; good ones are tough to find :\

The Parking Lot Movie

I love cheap documentaries. This movie is especially cheap. In the best way possible.

Filmed over a total of 3 years, this documentary captures the lives of the people who have been through The Corner Parking Lot in Virginia. It is a place where over 100 employees have worked, mostly kids going through school at the local university. Apparently the anthropologists are the best for the job because of their calm and collected states of minds, but the psychology and art majors are decent too. However, all of these guys are pretty hilarious. And guess who worked there way back when? The basist from Yo La Tengo! Crazy! Anyways, you have to watch this movie, especially for the end credits where some of the current employees direct an Andy Samberg-esque music video. It is absolutely amazing. Enjoy! And let us know how you liked it!

t.o.m. Animation by Holbrooks

Here’s a little award winning animation to turn that Tuesday frown upside down. It follows a boy, Tom, as he explains his morning routine.

ps. It’s awesome

Bradley Rogerson

Every once in awhile a project will come along that I am just blown away by. This is what graphic design is all about. You take a product, extract its essence, and represent visually what that product is so that the general public can understand and interact with it using the method you chose. This is what this project has done for me.

At first, I just awed at the simple beauty for about 24 seconds (which is a long time for someone who has to go through hundreds of photos a day, giving each one about half a second’s glance). And then I scrutinized the type and the logo, because they looked TOO perfect. Yeah, they are perfect. Finally, I took in the whole product. Image with type; type with packaging; packaging with image. Even down to the matching bottle caps and that amazing golden color of the cider. I was able to picture myself buying and drinking this product very easily, if I was in their demographic (which I am not, because most of the time I drink cheap beer and boxed wine). However, it made me wish very badly that I WAS in their demographic. That is good design.

Wedding Pics of Juliana & Benjamin

I found this set of wedding photos and I believe I have found the coolest couple in the world! How can you have a zombie in your ‘we’re a couple’ photo shoot and not be in the top 1% of coolest of the cool? Plus they clearly make a great team and would be great companions to have when the zombie apocalypse arrives….it’s only a matter of time.

Enjoy these pics, peep the rest of the set, and CONGRATULATIONS to those crazy crazy kids :)

Erin Wallace – Letterpress Greatness

You can’t help but click through everything that Erin has to offer on her site—it’s all just too good to miss. I’m loving on these colors, and to see them used through letterpress is something that takes my breath away and brings my toes to such a curl…

Erin is originally from our home, Seattle, and has since moved on to Baltimore to bigger and better things. Ok, I don’t know if there’s bigger and better things for her there, but her site proclaims she letterpresses all day, everyday, which there are very few bigger and better things than.

As if letterpressing all the time wasn’t cool enough, she also screen prints! and makes animations! I know what you’re thinking: the perfect woman.

Show Erin some love in the comments or on her site, and also, start doing letterpress; there could never be to much letterpress in the world :)

5 for 1

This Wednesday is special. I have all of these small things that I want to share, and it wouldn’t really make sense to give them their own posts since they are small things, but still boss things. So here they are:

1. This little animation for The Northwest Film & Video Festival by David Emmite. It’s too cute!!
www.davidemmite.com

2. A super easy free oriental pattern maker called Japonizer. If you are running out of time and need a little extra something for that poster or just need a fresh new desktop wallpaper, this will work great.
wanokoto.net/japonizes

3. A new find for Chris and I which we have been coveting, but no longer! Scriptographer is a revolutionary tool for the Adobe Illustrator user. It is a free scripting plugin that is super easy to use, and the effects can be quite amazing.
scriptographer.org

4. A great retro font resource, also free! When those other crazy free font websites aren’t doing it for you and you want something fresh and old school, this is the place for you.

5. Finally, our good friend Aaron Bloom showed me this after I wowed at his “The” on his newest poster creation. It is literally a stockpile of “the’s”. Seriously, this would have come in handy SO MANY TIMES. Again, FREE.

Quadradao

Why am I only just now learning about this amazing Brazilian studio? It’s just so good to see some clean clean design (and maybe I’m just a sucker for a sweet grid).

If you don’t like this work, then whevs to you; they’ve won awards! hello! How could you not have a couple awards under your belt with all those grids swimming around in your portfolio? Plus, with a little kiss of Dada in there: forget about it; super yummie.

They do a lot of identity so their site is def worth checking out to see more incorporation of the G-R-I-D

This makes me realize that I haven’t seen a ton of work coming out of South America and I’m sure it’s only because I’m living under a rock; I have to believe that there’s a million beautiful things flying from that place and nesting on the internet.  Time to do my research.

If you’re diggin’ this work, let us know in the comments…
