Our New Studio Space

That’s right, guys! BossnotBoss needs more space to match how serious we are about getting some screen prints going and we got it—down in the historical Pioneer Square in Seattle! We’ll be surrounded by painters, other screen printers, wood-workers, and plenty of other artists to keep our minds fresh as a fish (which is something I clearly need if I’m coming up with similes like that).

We’re teaming up with our buddy, Aaron Bloom, who’s also a designer and is doing a December wallpaper for y’all to enjoy! He’s also going to be doing some printing of his own and we’ll be helping out eachother with supplies, trading trick, secrets, and harsh critiques on our designs :)

We hope you’re as excited as we are to be making some prints for you :)

PS. that lady in the last pic is Rosa; we give our money to her and she’s super awesome

Eric Frommelt

Eric’s work is simple and complicated all at the same time and there’s something in my mind that wants to give that aspect a big hug and take it on a picnic. And you already know I’m digging on those colors so well I almost broke my mind shovel.

Most of these remind me a lot of an electrical diagram. Like those circuitry maps that have really geometric symbols and line that are either horizontal or vertical (I’ve recently become obsessed on those). But there are also elements that, although rigid and deliberate, seem very organic. It’s this strange and wonderful contrast that has gotten Eric’s work onto the great wall of BossnotBoss.

Be sure to peep more on his site!

Silver Screen Society

Re-found these guys after our good friend Aaron Bloom (you’ll be hearing about him more in the future here at BNB) contributed a poster design to their site. I love the idea these guys have come up with! They have started an amazing thing by having a monthly featured film where different designers and illustrators interpret their ideas of the movie into a poster or illustration. Some of them are quite fantastic.

It always sort of depresses me however, when I look at posters. I see so much greatness in print, but there is just no money in it. Such a beautiful art, wasting away. I’m really glad that amazing posters are still being created due to us designers that are obsessed with poster design and print that we will create posters for free almost every time we’re asked. I guess that’s something. Keep going guys!

Here are some of the designers/illustrators I pulled: Lauren Fundora, Chris Streger, Andrew Kolb, Aaron Bloom, Aaron Scamihorn, Patrick Burnell, Chelsey Scheffe, Laz Marquez, Chris DeLorenzo.

Todd Selby x Christine Sun Kim

We own the sound around us. It soothes, troubles, & assures us of the world we live in. There is more emotion in sound than we could ever fathom unless we couldn’t sense it. What is a sensation if you can’t detect it?

Christine Sun Kim doesn’t hear sound but she feels it. Born deaf, she has found a way to harness & express what she cannot grasp. Todd Selby (of The Selby!) showcases Christine’s deaf performance art & sonic experiments in this short but ever so intriguing new film. Definitely worth some of your time on this fine turkey day.

Check out more of Christine’s work here  And check out more Todd Selby here

ps. This post is the first BnB post by our new author, Ana Nelson! Be sure to check out her site to learn about how awesome she is :)

Honda’s Million Mile Joe

I know what you’re all saying: “This man’s a hero!” Right? Because they threw him his own parade and they gave him a new car, he must be some kind of hero? Like, he probably gave a hundred sick children blankets or saved an old woman from a burning building? Well, I’m sorry, but you’re totally wrong. Million Mile Joe actually got all of this hype for driving a shitty car around for a really long time. Disappointment? Disgust? Anger? Yes, these are all feelings you are probably having right now and all I can tell you is… there is no more hope.

After watching this video, I really thought it was a joke. I love the line that Joe says in the beginning, “I didn’t get the reaction or excitement I was hoping for…” WHAT WERE YOU HOPING FOR?? Oh Joe. Some of you might be feeling the opposite of me, and I understand. People LOVE local “success” stories. They eat that shit UP. What I am upset about is the fact that a whole town and company put on this huge expensive event for something so extremely silly and trivial. I was seriously waiting for them to say something like, “He drove a million miles and he only has one leg!” or, “Wow he went all that way while driving food to homeless shelters across the country!” But no. The video ends with Joe getting a new car, his wife almost in tears saying how proud she is, and Miss Maine giving him a huge key. WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE?

Fleet Foxes: The Shrine / An Argument

This vid just dropped yesterday and t0 say it’s amazingly amazing is an understatement. Are you seeing these colors?! forget about it.

It’s one of those rare times when the audio and the video go so well together that you have to stop everything you’re doing and really soak it in. Then you have to watch it 5 more times to soak it in again. Then watch it 6 more times just because it’s awesome.

There’s so many little things that happen which hint at this great story that’s going on, but nothing blindingly obvious shows up to ruin it (well maybe the story is obvious to you, but I’m still coming up with theories). I’d love to hear your thoughts on what’s going on in this masterpiece. Who was that dude that got pushed off the cliff in the beginning? The owner of the beast? Why is he dead? Who’s that dude just chillin inside the beast this whole time playing music? Why are there animal heads on sticks? Did those Tribal dancers put them there? I have so many questions I never want to learn the answer to.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is that some genuine stop motion in there? I pray to a thousand lords that it is.

ps. you can find that track off Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness Blues album :)

pps. Yes, Stacey Rozich did the character design; feel free to find you jaw on the floor now, please.

Marcell the Shell with Shoes On 2

For whatever reason, I wasn’t able to get too into the first one, but this one had me crackin’ up!

I love the bit where Marcell’s on the keyboard and there’s all these Zs repeating in the background; I’m all about little details like that.

ps Peep the first one in the post :)

Khan Academy

Education is one of the most important things on the planet, if it’s books smarts or street smarts, you can’t know too much. The more you learn from books, videos, real life, or (my involuntary favorite) mistakes the better you’ll become (so long as you exercise what you know).

I read about Khan Academy while thumbing through a WIRED magazine. The article introduced a 5th grader who was doing calculus work…. and that he’d been using Khan Academy to get to that level.

Khan Academy is a not-for-profit site where you can find videos and tests to help aid your education. It’s like the damn matrix for free, but with more videos, but less wires going into the back of your skull.

Sal Khan wants Khan Academy to become the world’s first free, world class virtual school where anyone can learn anything–for free. Now there’s a host of people contributing their passion for education towards the growth of the academy.

I’m most pumped on all the math to be learned, but there’s a heap of other brain yummies and they’re always adding more :) They’re also looking for translations of the videos so do one and submit it. I did submitted the videos for Undetermined Coefficients 1-4 in Pig-Latin–I’ve yet to hear back.

So start your friday with some of these vids and finish it by learning from your mistake of using karaoke as an avenue for impressing others.

New King Krule Tracks

These tracks are BOSS, no doubt. That said, I can’t stand this kids ginger voice slopping into my ears. I know you’re all starting to raise your finger at me, but I’m not racist; I had a ginger friend once in junior high, so that settles that matter.

Anyway, I must say that these tracks are helped by his dirty dirty ginger voice. For how much I dislike the voice, I need it to love these songs. Does that make sense? Does it have to? Did I mention this kid’s 17? Do you like paragraphs that end in several questions?

His self Titled EP just dropped this week so I strongly suggest running over to iTunes or your favorite torrent site and grabbing it. I suggest torrents but I don’t condone them. BnB logic is a fickle, fickle thing

ps. I’m also feelin this Metronomy remix :)
