Screen Prints by Anthony Cozzi

Anthony’s Screen prints are really getting me good in a sense that something can seem to be far greater than the sum of it’s parts. These prints are super simple, like a bread sandwich, but unlike a bread sandwich, there’s so many subtle flavors for my eyeballs to enjoy! Which is good because I have a couple epicurious peepers.

I have to say that after seeing the second skeleton print of his, I was stricken with a mad case of the Z’s, but if he has to dig through a thousand damn skeleton prints in his brain to get to the part that decides to make Elk Peak (the first image), then I’m totally ok with them.

There’s plenty more to see on his site like all the skeleton prints I didn’t show :)

BnB’s Wish List: Teleporters like in Portal

This has been on my wish list ever since my father sat me down and taught me how to play DOOM. And now, as a man, I believe, with a genuine childish optimism, that I will live to teleport in this reality (unless it turns out that a sort of parallel reality is required).

The term, teleporting, has been around since Charles Fort coined the term in his 1931 book, Lo!, but I have to believe that the idea of teleporting has been around a lot longer in the minds of the wonderers, dreamers, and lazy lazy fat people.

In 1993 it was discovered that quantum teleportation is totally possible so long as the original object being teleported doesn’t mind being completely destroyed, which implies that what comes out the other side is a replica, like how a fax machine works, which weirds me out. And since then some goobers have successfully teleported a photon(1 meter) and a laser beam (0.5 meters).

There’s plenty of babble that leans towards the idea that the laws of physics might make human teleporting impossible, but I can already tell you that it is because I know that I won’t die until I’ve teleported. Thinking of this I often wonder how a teleporter would be designed. Would their be a platform (DOOM style), or magic spells (Harry Potter style), or will it simply be something you can do with some high gravity training (Dragon Ball Z style). I prefer the Portal style, but I don’t like that you have to set your entrance and exit to somewhere within your line of sight. I don’t want to walk until I can see the grocery store before I can shoot my exit over there, I’d just get a grappling hook or some sort of spider man set up if that’s what I wanted.

I think you should be able to set your own entrance and punch in a code for an exit you want, similar to how a phone works, but instead of voice, it’s human :). Plus you could just have a community fridge space where people could just teleport to their cloud storage fridge and not have to have that damned ugly box in their flat (sorry, I just think all fridges are ugly. I’ve never thought “that’s a sexy fridge”).

Dazzle Camouflage post on Boss not Boss

Dazzle Camouflage

It seems like such a strange contrast to see ships painted this way in the context of WWI & II. It looks like a modern art project about something over-done like ‘playful painting on ominous battleship.’ But, unlike art, this actually has an intended function—camouflage (yeah yeah “art has a function: it makes me feel things”).

Developed by Norman Wilkinson (pictured at the end of the post) and first implemented in 1917 by the Royal Navy (Great Britain) and working with painters, sculpters, and even set designers, this camo doesn’t work in the traditional sense of trying to make an object invisible, but instead, this weaving of geometric madness serves to confuse an observer to not be able to make out it’s type, size, speed, and heading.

Creating this illusion is what rocked my world. I’m no Camologist,* but I always thought the idea was to make an object invisible, but now that illusion has been introduced into my camo-lexicon (lexouflage?), I wanna see some fucking Magic Eye submarines (even though I’m sure they don’t use bare optical observastion in the depth, but rather sonar like Ecco the Dolphin. I just like the term Magic Eye submarine). Perhaps, rather, a tank?

“I know, I can hear tanks too. But all that’s out there are space shuttles and unicorns. Here, look for yourself. No no no; you have to cross your eyes a little…” And this is why I help run a sideways blog instead.

Although it does look pretty cool, there really wasn’t sufficient data to show whether or not it actually worked. Plus by the time WWII rolled around, the advances in radar had made Razzle Dazzle as usefull as painting flames on your Geo.

The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales

With 2011 winding down and all the “Best of” lists rolling out left and right, it only seems appropriate to follow suit and share one of my favorite albums of 2011, “The Unspeakable” from Chilly Gonzales AKA Canadian born-Paris based Jason Charles Beck.

For those unacquainted with Chilly Gonzales, he’s a piano virtuoso, an “Entertainist” (don’t call him an artist), Grammy nominated producer, weirdo rapper, Guinness world record holder for longest solo concert (27 hours 3 minutes), bathrobe and slippers aficionado, performer extraordinaire, and apparently my favorite musician to force on people when I’m drunk. You may recognize him as producer/writer/collaborator and all around BFF to fellow Canuck Feist.

“The Unspeakable” is Gonzo’s follow up to the incredible Boys Noize produced album “Ivory Tower” from last year (an album that also spawned an existentialist sports comedy film about chess and success and starring Gonzo himself, Tiga, and Peaches). Heralded as the World’s first orchestral rap album, “The Unspeakable” juxtaposes gorgeous orchestral movements with Gonz’s trademark whip smart, pun laced, left field, absurdist humor. He’s not lying when he states “Listen, it’s entertainment/But if you listen the genius is in the arrangement”  and with deadpan comedic ingenuity like “I’m cult/if I wanted culture I’d eat a yogurt” and “I’m going through a difficult stage/From young Nicholas Cage to present day Nicholas Cage” you really can’t deny it when he labels himself “The Musical Genius.”

For a just-the-tip experience, check out the video medley for the album as well as the Tim and Eric-esque video for “Party In My Mind,”, and when your inevitable appetite for more arises, I highly recommend satiating yourself with his entire performance with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna (via Youtube) to really see what the Gonz is capable of.  For those of you who’d rather enjoy some come-down music after a long night, something to help you relax, or you just want to impress your friends without the trouble of actually knowing who Erik Satie is, go for Gonzales’s highly acclaimed 2004 record “Solo Piano”.

This has been the first post from our new contributor, Wyatt Carroll, who is yet another graphic design friend of ours with a unique style no simple man dare attempt to reiterate. He also has a mustache

BnB’s Wish List: Landland Print Subscription

I hope Mr. Santa Clause reads BossnotBoss because I’ve added Landland’s 2011 print subscription to my wish-list.

Landland is Dan Black, Jessica Seamans & Matt Zaun; all of which are designers, print makers and illustrators from Minneapolis. They’ve had this print subscription going all year and it costs $500.00! (hear me out) While that sounds like a lot of cash to put down for some screen-prints, which it is, but it’s definitely a lot of BOOOOM for your buck.

So the idea is that you get one of everything they print (or did print) for the entire calendar year, and if you’re a Landland fan, you know how prolific they are. This includes over 50 show posters, art prints, make ready prints, zines, books, and even records (yes, they also have a record label, Landland is not a record label). Since the year is coming to a close they only have 2 more subscriptions available, I’m guessing this means you’d just be getting a big shipment of radical.

Dan Black (master of the 4 color process print) has made a list of everything that’s included in the subscription over in their store

Lekan Jeyifo

You ought to know by now that these colors are what initially caught my peepers by the collar and started slapping them back n’ forth in a cartoonish style yelling, “LOOK AT ME”, but the detail is what reeled me in quick like when you realize a woman’s laughing at your jokes, even when they’re not funny.

A few of these look like really official charts and diagrams of circuitry maps which is something I’m slowly becoming obsessed on. There’s just something about seeing design work at maximum efficiency that gives me a nice hard-on. It’s so frustrating to hear people think that design is just making things pretty……but that’s a whole other discussion.

Jeyifo has a ton of other work running around on his Behance, but they just don’t arrest me like these ones do, but you should see the rest of his work for yourself and maybe put me in my place.

Damien Tran

I learned a new word last week, pareidolia, and normally when I come across a word that I can’t pronounce and ends in “olia” I figure that it just belongs to the doctors and scientists of our great planet. But this word has a meaning that has fascinated me since I was a little boy.

The psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant. Basically its what convinces you there’s animals in the clouds, it’s also the culprit of sending you secret messages through your toast! With that said I wanted to share some of Damien Tran’s work, a designer and screen printer from Berlin.

Its great to see collage work translate to screen printing so well, he pulls some great 4 and 5 color prints and has some crazy 25 color zine collaborations going on. There’s definitely something to be said for work that can evolve with your perspective over time.

Go check out more of his work over on his site and his Flickr

BNB’s Holiday Wish List: EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Who has an extra pile of money laying around that they want to spend on themselves?? Good! I’ve got something you might want to throw it at! Bossnotboss will be showcasing some of our holiday design/photography wish-list items through the rest of December. We’ll make sure that heavy wallet feels lighter.

A camera lens? Yes! The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens. At a mere $100 this plastic lens is lightweight and affordable. I’ve had lots of personal experience with it and it’s awesome. As a graphic designer that dabbles in photography for my personal blog, I am very impressed with its stylish shots without any photoshop necessary. It’s
amazing for portraits as it’s extremely close to how your eye perceives a subject. This should be a kit lens but as others have said before, it’s probably not because you wouldn’t want to buy any other lenses after it! I plan on acquiring my own this season.

Check out these shots Dane and I have taken in the past couple of months with his Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens.

New Mix: DON’T SPEAK

This month’s mix is just a bunch of (mostly) newly acquired sounds by some cool kids. I based the feel of it off of Ladytron’s newest album which is super slick with new beautiful melodies and their classic electronic sound. Mostly lyric-less, which I sometimes enjoy because it helps me clear my head and not think about anything, or think about everything. But either way, I hope you enjoy it!
